Fruitful Communities believes that our Seniors are the cornerstone of our society. “SEE” – Serving, Engaging, and Empowering Seniors is our mission. An often-neglected part of our community, we engage our older adults by serving their needs, empowering them to continue to “give back” through mentorship, and to provide opportunities to leave great legacies.
People are social beings who have been forming connections since birth. We thrive on interacting with others and we want to belong and feel connected to a community. For our Seniors, social inclusion promotes healthy aging and improves their quality of life. The role of the community is to ensure the well-being of our Senior population by taking care of them just as they have taken care of us.
One of the challenges our Senior population faces, increased by the Covid-19 pandemic, is social isolation and loneliness which can be a deadly epidemic in itself. Because the risk of death from COVID-19 increases with age, family members and friends are limiting their visits to older people, whether they’re in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or just their own homes. The new practice of social distancing is compounding their health issues by increasing the number of diseases they have, compromising their immune systems, and decreasing their physical activities. The World Health Organization reports that more than 95% of Covid-19 deaths around the world are linked to the over 60 population and more than half of those deaths from age 80+. Loneliness due to isolation is estimated to impact 51% of people over 75 years because they live alone, and as many as 6 million adults over the age of 65 have a disability that keeps them confined to their homes. Covid-19 has increased these numbers exponentially.
Our Seniors programs are designed to engage seniors in the community through the mentoring of others, and supporting the social participation and inclusion of seniors. Covid-19 has compounded the relation of disease and old age, increasing the severity of illness and risk of death in this population so we take every precaution to ensure their safety.
Fruitful Communities will be launching Seniors Connect a program designed to promote volunteerism among Seniors, mentorship, and intergenerational engagement. The program will be run by seniors, youth, and other service agencies who will be trained to deliver courses that will promote the Read-To-Me Program, educational/informative workshops teaching Covid-19 safe practices, proper PPE use, social distancing practices, and post-pandemic care and social activities and fitness classes which will promote connections with other seniors and build and/or strengthen existing family and community connections.
Designed to teach Seniors how to use computers, smartphones, and other digital gadgets and software, while engaging them with the younger generation.
